Daily Journal: What techniques do you use to break a logjam in mediation:

Neal: I urge the parties to ignore the old saw about "negotiating against yourself" and, instead, negotiate in a way that is consistent with their own interests, even if the other side is being irrational. A strong, reasonable proposal puts the most pressure on the other side to be reasonable. It is much harder to say no to a reasonable proposal than an extreme one.
