SAN FRANCISCO — George C. Hernandez Jr., who became a neutral last year after more than three decades on the Alameda County Superior Court, said his new job has been liberating.

While he misses being a judge, Hernandez said the ability of a mediator to speak to parties while trying to reach a deal is enjoyable.
