JAMS San Francisco Specialties: employment, catastrophic personal injury, business

James has been busy with a variety of cases, including mediating 20 settlements between Pacific Gas & Electric Co. and those affected by the 2010 explosion of a natural gas pipeline in San Bruno.

The accident killed eight people, and left others with serious injuries and psychological damage. Her biggest challenge was "appreciating the horror that each family went through and trying to translate that into numbers," James said.

The former Contra Costa County Superior Court judge also mediated settlements in class action cases alleging deceptive and fraudulent food labeling as well as one claiming an online marketplace was failing to provide sellers the promised help in promoting their products.

In one of her more unusual cases, James said she mediated a case between two wine companies, where one accused the other of botching wine it had agreed to process. She showed up to the mediation with a surprise - the table was laid out with wine samples and glasses so that the expert taster could demonstrate the alleged wine defects, James said.
