School district ends drug testing in settlement

The Shasta Union High School District has agreed to end its policy of random, mandatory drug testing of students who participate in school-related activities to resolve a lawsuit brought by civil rights advocates.

The American Civil Liberties Union of Northern California and Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman LLP, which served as pro bono counsel, filed the lawsuit in 2008 on behalf of three students and their parents, accusing the school district of violating the California Constitution by drug testing students without any suspicion of drug use. Both the Shasta County Superior Court and the California Court of Appeal found that the district violated state law.
