Panish Shea & Boyle LLP | Los Angeles | litigation: plaintiffs personal injury | Age: 36

Lucas was doing general litigation and contract work when he finished law school. He enjoyed it, but didn't find it to be fulfilling until one of his clients brought him an unrelated matter.

"I stumbled upon a serious injury case because my client got hit by a drunk driver," Lucas said. "Within a matter of a couple weeks, I had gotten the full insurance policy limit for my client."

With that experience, Lucas found an area of law that was fulfilling and that he excelled in. Last year, he helped obtain more than $50 million in verdicts for his clients. He has faced attorneys from many of the largest and most prestigious firms, including O'Melveny & Myers LLP and Lewis Brisbois Bisgaard & Smith LLP. He faced particularly aggressive defense attorneys in the first catastrophic injury case that he litigated as the lead trial attorney. In the case, he represented a client who was hit by a construction truck while riding a motorcycle.

"The defense did 3Â1/2 years of surveillance of my client," Lucas said. "The defense offered $1 million."

Instead of settling, Lucas proceeded with the trial and the jury returned a verdict of more than $19 million.

"My clients are faced with the most terrible situations imaginable, whether it's a traumatic brain injury, the loss of a limb or the loss of a loved one," Lucas said. "It's a tremendous feeling to be able to bring about justice for someone who's been seriously harmed as a result of the negligence of another."
