Procopio, Cory, Hargreaves & Savitch LLP | San Diego | litigation: health care, white collar criminal defense | Age: 39

As a former assistant U.S. attorney, Marasco knows the right strategy for attorneys and law firms facing government subpoenas, investigations, or even criminal prosecution.

Recently Marasco represented a software company accused by the state of failing to report a data breach. Marasco convinced the state attorney general to drop the investigation after proving no breach occurred.

Afterwards, he worked with the company to update its privacy data agreements to avoid similar situations in the future. Marasco does related compliance work with law firms, a job he said is particularly rewarding.

"I take a lot of pride in being hired to represent lawyers or other law firms," Marasco said. "I recognize that these are my colleagues and that they have put their livelihoods in my hands."

Health care law, including fraud and abuse and HIPAA compliance, also number among his specialties.

Marasco said his passion for law is partially based on a maxim instilled in him while attending College of the Holy Cross as an undergraduate: From whom much is given, much is expected.

"I thought, 'What is the best vocation for me that would allow me to help others?' The answer was the law. I jumped in with both feet."
