Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon appointed Gloria to the post, which will involve working with the Democratic caucus to advance its agenda.
"I am honored to have this opportunity, and I am truly humbled by the faith speaker Rendon has placed in me to take a leadership role in the legislature," Gloria said. "When I was sworn in as a state assemblymember, I pledged to champion housing affordability and to improve our state's crumbling transportation infrastructure. This new role gives me more opportunities to advance these priorities and others that will ultimately move California forward."
In November, Gloria was elected to the Assembly's 78th district seat, replacing the termed-out Toni Atkins.
The 78th Assembly District encompasses several coastal communities in San Diego, including the cities of Imperial Beach, Coronado, Del Mar and Solana Beach.
A third-generation San Diegan, Gloria served on San Diego City Council for eight years. Serving as District 3 councilman, he represented downtown San Diego, and Balboa Park, Hillcrest and Mission Hills.
He served as San Diego's interim mayor following the resignation of Bob Filner in 2013.
During his tenure as both a councilmember and as interim mayor, Gloria spearheaded issues such as housing affordability, greenhouse gas emissions and homelessness.
