Winston & Strawn LLP San Francisco

The products of Bloch's client Aevoe were being displayed in Las Vegas at the biggest consumer electronics show in the world. Nearby, two other exhibitors were selling knockoffs of those very same wares.

Aevoe's chief executive officer called Bloch and asked what he could do about it.

He said, "'We want to be aggressive,'" Bloch said. "We went in and obtained seizure orders against the two companies, and the U.S. marshals came in and put the stuff in boxes."

The product in question involved protective touchscreen covers created by Aevoe for mobile devices, iPads and smart phones.

Bloch said he'd had this experience before and knew how to handle it.

With the clock ticking at the weeklong industry event, there was a lot at stake.

"Every day, our client was competing with infringing products," he said. "We showed a significant urgency - that they could return to their home countries and outside the reach of the U.S. court. The court agreed with us. We nipped it in the bud."

With preliminary injunctions in force, the cases are ongoing. Aevoe Corp. v. AE Tech Co. Ltd.; S&F Corp., and GreatShield Inc., 12-CV-00053 (D. Nevada), and Aevoe Corp. v. Shenzhen Membrane Precise Electron Ltd., 12-CV-00054 (D. Nevada).

Bloch's practice encompasses complex intellectual property litigation, including commercial disputes involving patents, design patents, copyrights, trademarks and trade secrets.

His clients are heavily concentrated in technical and medical fields, such as biotech and pharmaceutical, semiconductors, consumer products and computer hardware and software.

Bloch also engages in IP matters that involve antitrust law and government contracts, providing advice to businesses.

While lately his work has been patent-focused, Bloch said, "I maintain a practice with both patent and non-patent aspects. I've always tried to maintain a generalist IP practice. It's hard in a lot of places to avoid getting typecast as one type of IP lawyer. Luckily at Winston, I haven't had that pressure."
