Specializing in both commercial litigation and white collar criminal defense, Hueston Hennigan's high-profile client list is drawn from the Fortune 500 and includes companies in several industries, including telecommunications, technology, pharmaceuticals, insurance, entertainment, financial services, international gaming, health care and consumer debt. Among the firm's other notable clients, are Walt Disney Co., GlaxoSmithKline, Pizza Hut, Management of Hawaii Inc. T-Mobile USA Inc. and William Koch.
John Hueston and Brian Hennigan began the firm in January with a vision to create
a nimble, trial law boutique for high-profile clients and high-impact cases. To accomplish
those ends, they left Irell & Manella's business trials and white collar department,
with the firm's business trials group partners, to build their own firm that includes
several well-regarded attorneys, top young associates and the recent addition of entertainment
attorney Robert Klieger, formerly of Kendall, Klieger & Brill LLP.
'We're not our prior law firm for less," Hueston said. "We think we are a more nimble
law firm that will allow financial upside when the client is experiencing financial
upside. We put our money where our skills and reputation are. We put awards and fees
on results rather than just pure hours."
The partners at Hueston Hennigan said they treat every matter as if it will go to
court, but to do so, move beyond legal issues to understand each client's business.
"We are a trial lawyer's firm," Hueston said. "We tell new prospective clients 'We
don't want your common litigation.' We think about ourselves as trial lawyers from
the get go. Those cases are our specialty."
As plaintiffs' counsel, the firm has secured verdicts, summary judgments and settlements
in the billions of dollars. As defense counsel, the firm has helped their clients
avoid a similar amount in exposure.
So far, the firm's ethos has helped secure verdicts that include a $5.1 billion settlement
in Tronox V. Anadarko, the largest environmental fraudulent transfer case in U.S.
history. But the firm cares about more than winning, Hueston Hennigan values and dedicates
its resources to cases that will have a positive impact on society including acting
as counsel for community, social justice and governmental organizations.
"We are really looking at cases that really going to make the ultimate difference
for an individual or company regardless of niche of law," Hueston said.
Recently, Hueston Hennigan began representing the Navajo Nation in claims arising
out of the spill of 3 million gallons of hazardous waste from the Gold King Mine leading
to the contamination of the Animas River and the San Juan River - a primary water
source for the Navajo Nation. The potential defendants for the case include the U.S.
Environmental Protection Agency, mine owners and operators and others. The Navajo
Nation president has said the Nation will seek damages in the hundreds of millions
to billions of dollars.
In choosing Hueston Hennigan, the Navajo Nation bypassed several larger firms, noting
its confidence in the track record and experience of the firm's lead attorneys.
"Mr. Hueston and his team of skilled litigators will work tirelessly to secure justice
and equity for the Navajo Nation and the Navajo people as we address the aftermath
of the disastrous Gold King Mine spill. The impact has been devastating to our culture
and economy, as well as to the peace of mind of our people," said Navajo Nation Attorney
General Ethel Branch.
Hueston Hennigan is also representing more than a dozen subsidiaries of The Walt Disney
Co. in a complex trademark infringement and unfair competition action pending in U.S.
District Court and T-Mobile USA Inc. in a lawsuit alleging trade secrets theft against
Chinese manufacturers of smart phones, for alleged theft of test robot parts, computer
code and other trade secret information.
"Our commitment is to represent the client honestly, honorably and aggressively,"
Hennigan said.
Hennigan said he expects the firm will grow over the next several years to match the
needs of their clients.
"My overall sense is that gets us to 50 to 60 attorneys in three or four years and
then there are other decisions to make. Hopefully the growth follows that organically,"
he said.
