What Jane Doe did was to act as a hero," said Greene of his client who settled a civil
rights suit against the city of San Diego for $5.9 million in September. Doe was
sexually assaulted by Anthony Arevalos, a former San Diego police officer, in 2011.
She was one of 13 victims assaulted by Arevalos during the course of his duties as
a police officer.
"We basically revealed that the city of San Diego, allowed this to happen, allowed
it to continue to happen and that basically they didn't consider it to be a big deal,
until we got the media involved in San Diego, that's what made it a big deal." Arevalos
was convicted on numerous accounts of sexual battery, assault and accepting bribes
in 2011. Since Doe came forward, the U.S. Department of Justice has begun investigating
the practices of the San Diego Police Department. Doe v. San Diego et al., CV12-00689 (S.D. Cal., filed March 21, 2012).
For Greene, this case symbolizes what is great about representing consumers, "You
stand up for the right thing, you do it for the right reason, you go after it and
you succeed."
