A criminal record doesn’t make you a ‘criminal’

The headline the Daily Journal chose for a recent story feeds into the hysteria being generated and exploited by the Trump administration against refugees.

As a practicing lawyer, I am a regular reader of the Daily Journal. I find many of your articles timely, informative and thought-provoking. I am not a regular reader of the New York Post. It is a shame that the Daily Journal published the above referenced article ["Cambodian criminals win ruling," Aug. 16], the contents of which met your normal standard of being timely, informative and thought-provoking, under a headline typical of the Post. Having a "criminal record" does not make one a "criminal." The headline the Daily Journal chose feeds into the hysteria being generated and exploited by the Trump administration against refugees, especially refugees of color. The article recognizes that "many of the class members' [alleged] crimes had been committed years or decades ago." Then why does the Daily Journal label them "criminals" today?

Editors Note: The referenced headline appeared in the August 16 print version of the Daily Journal.
