About those low-income criminal defendants

The Nov. 21 headline story, "Cash bail referendum now closer," contained the following statement by one Katie Hanzlik, identified as Sen. Robert Hertzberg's press secretary. Ms. Hanzlik is quoted as saying, "They've [billion dollar private equity firms] shown that they will do anything to uphold the status quo of exploiting low-income Californians because it will keep their industry alive."
Perhaps Ms. Hanzlik should ask her employer, Sen. Hertzberg, who his father was. Harry Hertzberg along with Grant Cooper, Joe Lewis and Lee Zeman were the preeminent criminal defense lawyers in this county in the 1930s, 40s and 50s.
Perhaps Sen. Hertzberg will tell you stories his father told him of how these "low-income Californians" constituted 98 percent of the criminal defendants arrested for crimes from murder to drug trafficking to robbery.
These "low-income Californians" are in jail because they deserve to be.
