Oral arguments regarding allegations against Justice Jeffrey W. Johnson of prejudicial judicial conduct and improper behavior are set for March 18 in San Francisco, the Commission on Judicial Performance announced Wednesday.
The announcement follows a Monday report from a panel of special masters, which declared a host of sexual harassment allegations against Johnson had been proven. It affirmed 15 counts of prejudicial misconduct, which could lead to Johnson's removal from the bench.
The hearing will start at 1:30 p.m. at the Ceremonial Courtroom on the 19th Floor of the United States District Court and is open to the public.
Attorney Emma Bradford serves as examiner for the commission to defend the report.
Johnson is represented by Paul S. Meyer of Costa Mesa and Reginald A. Vitek of San Diego, who may object to or agree with parts of the report.
The 316-page document contained the panel's findings of fact and conclusions of law, following a 17-day hearing last year that included more than 100 witnesses.
The Commission on Judicial Performance accused Johnson of assaulting, harassing or demeaning 17 women over nearly 20 years, ranging from young attorneys and clerks to colleagues on the 2nd District Court of Appeal.
The commission, which will eventually decide whether Johnson is to be removed or not, is composed of six public members, three judges, and two lawyers. The chairperson is Nanci E. Nishimura of Cotchett, Pitre & McCarthy LLP.
