Patrick J. Walsh, a retired U.S. magistrate judge in Los Angeles, joined Signature Resolution on Monday.
Walsh followed Suzanne H. Segal, another retired magistrate judge, who has been at Signature since February.
He said the alternative dispute resolution firm expects to grow its roster of former federal bench officers. His last day on the job as a magistrate was Aug. 23; the judge signed off on his last decision Sunday night, involving a police brutality/civil rights case against the County of Los Angeles sheriff's office in Compton.
Walsh will work as a mediator, arbitrator and special master focused on intellectual property, civil rights, torts and business/commercial matters.
"I loved being a judge, and I think I'll love being a mediator, arbitrator and special master, incorporating the things that I loved so much in the past into my new job with Signature," Walsh said.
Walsh, who celebrated his 61st birthday on Friday, said after decades as a prosecutor and a judge he wants to deal with different aspects of the legal system.
"I definitely want to see something new. I want to learn something new. I have a good 15 years left in me to work and enjoy it," he said.
Walsh served for nearly two decades on the Central District of California, including as chief magistrate judge for the last four years. His first legal job was with the U.S. Department of Justice as a trial attorney.
"Judge Walsh is known for his understanding and handling of both criminal and civil issues," said Dario Higuchi, managing member of Signature Resolution. "Both sides say he treats each matter uniquely and strives to bring a sense of equity to each case before him. We're very excited to have him join our panel."
