US Judge John Mendez in Sacramento takes senior status next year

The move would create a third vacancy in the Eastern District of California court.

U.S. District Judge John A. Mendez of the Eastern District of California has joined other federal judges who announced semi-retirement after President Joe Biden took office.

Mendez, based in Sacramento, will take senior status April 17, 2022, after 14 years on the federal court. Mendez was appointed to the court by President George W. Bush in 2008.

He sent a letter to Biden on April 19 stating his intention to take senior status.

There are three open seats in the Northern District of California; six in the Central District; six in the Southern District and -- with the addition of Mendez -- three in the Eastern District. The other Eastern District vacancies were created by the retirement of Lawrence J. O'Neill and the senior status of Judge Morrison C. England Jr.
