Berkeley / Criminal Defense

Julia Jayne

In 2006, Julia Jayne and former prosecutor Gail A. Campbell formed Campbell & Jayne LLP, a boutique law firm specializing in white-collar crime, complex criminal defense and trial work. The firm became Jayne Law Group in 2012 as Campbell took a hiatus from practicing law to start a family.

About 75% of the firm's practice is in federal court, representing individuals and businesses that are under investigation or facing criminal charges. Some of the white-collar crime matters the firm handles include mail and wire fraud violations, bribery and kickbacks, securities fraud, money laundering, embezzlement, antitrust and more.

"These are usually individuals who have never had any trouble with the law, have never been to jail or prison, and are completely in the dark and shellshocked when it comes to the legal system," Jayne said. "They find themselves lost and shocked that they've reached this point in their lives because they have, for example, made a mistake or a bad decision or were targeted and actually haven't broken the law. These individuals are looking to me to educate them and help them down this path because what's happening is completely foreign."

Prior to founding the firm, Jayne served as a deputy district attorney in Contra Costa County. As a prosecutor, she filed criminal charges, negotiated cases and tried a variety of misdemeanor, felony and juvenile cases. That experience on the other side of the table has given Jayne inside knowledge of the inner workings of a prosecutor's office. Her time in the D.A.'s office also has been instrumental to her development as a lawyer, she said, because of the volume of cases that she handled.

"In my time there, I took 29 cases to jury, had so many preliminary hearings and countless court trials in the juvenile division," she said. "I had a lot of power, even as a young attorney, to really affect people's lives - and that informs my practice now."

In a recent well-publicized case. Jayne represented a former Netflix executive accused of receiving stock options and kickbacks from tech companies to approve contracts with the streaming giant. United States v. Kail. 18-00172 (N.D. Cal.. filed April 26. 2018). While the case did not result in a not guilty verdict. it demonstrates that the firm is not afraid to try cases. The sentence was also much lower than anticipated due to a successful sentencing hearing, and the sentence has been stayed while the case is on appeal.

In another high-profile case, the client was charged with theft of trade secrets from Genentech. Jayne reached an outcome of a misdemeanor with eight months of probation for the client - a tremendous outcome in a very serious case.

"Someone may be going through the worst experience of their life, and while it's comforting to be able to speak to someone about it, what they look to me for is the solution - how are they going to get through this? What are the options?"

"I can't promise outcomes, but no matter the outcome, I've rarely had a client be upset with me because I've laid out everything so clearly, and I won't stop until every stone has been turned," Jayne said.
