Hon. Wynne S. Carvill (Ret.) joined JAMS following 16 years as a judge on the Alameda Superior Court and 25 years as a commercial litigator in a large national law firm.

Judge Carvill served as presiding judge in his last two years on the bench and before that as a full-time settlement judge, where he handled approximately a dozen settlement conferences every week for two years.

Prior to his tenure as a settlement judge, he served for four years in one of the court's two complex litigation departments, where he managed class action, wage and hour, antitrust, trade secret, construction, environmental and other commercial cases.

He also served in a civil direct calendar department, where he presided over numerous jury trials. In private practice, Judge Carvill handled antitrust cases and successfully tried several such cases in front of juries in federal and state courts.

He also handled a variety of other complex cases, such as disputes arising out of corporate acquisitions, software re-engineering projects and the implementation of Proposition 103.

For 10 years, he was the firm's general counsel and managed all cases in which the firm was a party and oversaw the firm's risk management program.

At JAMS, Judge Carvill has served as an arbitrator in wrongful termination, antitrust, real estate, corporate merger and other complex commercial cases.

He regularly mediates employment and commercial cases and keeps engaged in the process even if it does not settle on the mediation date. He brings preparation, follow-up and persistence to every mediation.

Recent successful mediations have included wage and hour class actions, wrongful termination claims, franchise and distributorship disputes, and medical staff issues at hospitals.

Judge Carvill has also served as a discovery referee, overseeing contentious depositions, resolving privilege disputes involving voluminous documents, and managing discovery in large complex cases.
