Justice Cynthia G. Aaron has earned a reputation among her colleagues and the bar as an acclaimed judge and a gifted mediator with excellent interpersonal skills and an exceptional ability to resolve even the most contentious cases and appellate reviews. She has been praised as a hard-working jurist with outstanding problem-solving skills, guiding parties to a mutually agreeable resolution to their case, thus enabling them to avoid the expense, uncertainty, and stress of protracted litigation.
Before joining Judicate West's roster of neutrals in 2023, Justice Aaron served as an associate justice on California's Fourth District Court of Appeal for 20 years, resolving all types of cases filed in superior court. Prior to her 2003 bench appointment, she served as a magistrate judge in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of California, conducting hundreds of settlement conferences in federal civil cases. Justice Aaron began her legal career as a trial lawyer with the Federal Defenders of San Diego, Inc. before founding her own firm, focused on defending federal criminal cases.
Active in the legal community, Justice Aaron is a member of the Appellate Inn of Court and the San Diego County Judges Association, where she served terms on the board of directors and as president. She is also a past board member of the San Diego Volunteer Lawyer Program and a sustaining member of Lawyers Club of San Diego. Additionally, Justice Aaron is a recipient of the AJC Judge Learned Hand Award in recognition of her leadership and commitment to equity, justice and excellence in the application of law.
