San Francisco
In the heart of San Francisco, where tech giants and startups collide, Warrington Parker is a trailblazer with a knack for turning complex tech jargon into winning legal arguments.
As the managing partner of Crowell & Moring's San Francisco office, Parker isn't just another suit in the courtroom -- his career reads like a legal thriller. He is a former federal prosecutor who has put away some of the nation's most vile criminals. Now he is locked in a David-versus-Goliath battle, defending AI upstart ROSS Intelligence against industry behemoths Thomson Reuters and West Publishing. Thomson Reuters Enterprise Centre GmbH and West Publishing Corp. v. ROSS Intelligence, Inc., 1:20-cv-00613-SB (D. Del. filed May 06, 2020).
"One of the issues in the case is whether or not it is fair use to use data and information to train your AI," Warrington said. "That has not been squarely decided and I think that's a very important step developing the AI legal landscape."
This case is about more than copyright; it's a high-stakes showdown that could reshape legal research and AI.
"It is also important because we are the furthest along. Most of the AI cases that have been filed are all at the pleading stage, meaning they haven't really gotten to the point getting into the substance of the case," Parker added.
In his spare time, Parker teaches law students trial advocacy and legal research and writing.
Parker didn't always want to be an attorney. When he was in high school, he wanted to be an orthodontist, but after being injured playing football, he joined the debate team -- the place where he found his true calling.
"I was in a two-person debate and began just to love the argument side, the standing up asking question side, and that's when I decided I wanted to be a lawyer," he said. "And I went to college knowing I wanted to be a lawyer, and then went straight to law school."
Through his participation in Crowell's racial equity task force, he has demonstrated a strong commitment to fostering inclusivity and justice within the legal profession and beyond.
