Ian Silvers got hooked on employment law in law school. "I took an employment law class because I figured that's something that sounds interesting since it affects everyone," he recalled. This interest blossomed into a calling after he went to work for a legal nonprofit.
"It felt like you were actually making a difference," Silvers said.
Since then, he has taken on a range of complex matters including disputes over arbitration agreements and forum selection and successfully argued them before trial and appellate courts. In fact, cases that break new legal ground are the ones that interest him the most.
In a recent case involving agricultural workers, he fought against an unfair arbitration agreement. "The workers were forced to sign the arbitration agreement with no clue what it was. One of them was given a stack of papers in the field to sign," he said. "These two people were willing to step forward and help others -- there are about 15,000 class members at this point." Bonilla v. Reiter Berry Farms, Inc., H050268 (Cal. Ct. App. Aug. 28, 2023).
In another matter, Silvers obtained a settlement for a class of employees in a Fair Labor Standards Act collective action for Ohio employees working at low-wage fast food restaurants who were required to continue working while off the clock for breaks. Emory v. Ampler Burgers, 2:20-CV-04133, (S.D. Ohio filed Aug. 12, 2020).
"I love helping protect those being taken advantage of by their employers," he said.
Silvers is a member of the Wage and Hour Committee of the California employment Lawyers Association and a member of the Orange County Jewish Bar Association.
He is passionate about safeguarding and advocating for employees' rights. Over the years, he has honed his skills and expertise in this field, allowing him to navigate complex legal issues confidently and proficiently.
