When she was just a little girl, Nicole Kelsey knew she wanted to be a lawyer when she watched Atticus Finch defend the falsely accused Tom Robinson in “To Kill a Mockingbird,” the fictional telling of a young girl’s life observing racism, friendship and the law.

“I was very taken by the film and turned to my dad at the time and said, ‘I want to do what that tall man is doing, but I want to wear a dress,’” she said.
