POMONA — After his family immigrated from Burma in 1988 when he was 5 years old, Superior Court Judge Bryant Y. Yang said he knew he wanted to pursue a career in law because he saw so much persecution in his native land and in other countries.

Ten members of his family, including extended family members, came to the United States and lived in a three-bedroom condominium in East Los Angeles.
