FRESNO -- If Commissioner Noelle E. Pebet could get at least one misdemeanor defendant per day to change their ways -- to make their court appearance, complete probation terms -- the former prosecutor would be more sanguine about her role.

"Half the battle is showing up and being on time," the commissioner states pragmatically while on break from her busy calendar of up to 120 cases a day.
