OAKLAND -- Superior Court Judge Sharon Djemal says the desire to make an impact on her community was the driving force behind her legal career, even though she went around the world to get there.

She spent two decades at the East Bay Community Law Center, where she worked her way up from staff attorney to director of the Consumer Justice Clinic before her appointment to the Alameda County court by Gov. Gavin Newsom.
