      SANTA MARIA Criminal attorneys in Santa Maria can be forgiven if they didn't notice Judge James E. Herman's first day on the Santa Barbara County bench last year.
      After all, international attention was focused on another Santa Maria courtroom that day, as the jury in the Michael Jackson molestation case returned with its acquittal.
