Appointed to the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California by President Clinton in 1995, Susan Illston has become known as one of the brightest and most hardworking jurists on the court. SAN FRANCISCO - By the time she was 18, Susan Illston had lived on three continents.

The daughter of a U.S. Army officer, Illston was born in Tokyo in 1948 and traveled with her family to Greece, Germany and the United States.
