VISTA — It took two tries for Judge Richard S. Whitney to win a seat on the bench, and when he finally did in 2002, it was in the face of personal tragedy.

His mother was on her deathbed after battling Lou Gehrig's disease, but Whitney got a chance to tell her about his big win.
