SAN JOSE - Peter H. Kirwan had three good reasons for becoming a judge: Brittany, Matthew and Emily.

In 2002, Kirwan lost his wife, Lorena, to cancer. As a single father of three kids, ages 7, 11 and 13, he knew his unpredictable schedule as a law firm attorney wasn't going to work anymore.
