SAN JOSE - When Derek Woodhouse was 16, his family was served with a notice of eviction. Soon after, they had crammed all of their belongings into a U-Haul.

By that time, Woodhouse, who was born in Manitoba, Canada, had moved a dozen times and enrolled in several schools. His father, a man Woodhouse describes as a nomad, had around 50 employers over the course of his lifetime.
