      Bernard Zimmerman's first travel destination was Ellis Island, N.Y.
      "I can remember the trip because I had a job," said Zimmerman, recalling the trans-Atlantic voyage from Germany to America in 1949. "My dad had seasickness, and my mom and I would walk through the mess line to get our grapefruits."
