      LANCASTER - Elena Duarte never saw it coming.
      Duarte, a first-year law student, was sitting on a cement bench in front of the Kettle Restaurant in Manhattan Beach 18 years ago, waiting for a friend. It was a warm and sunny Cinco de Mayo - perfect beach weather.
