PASADENA -- A trifecta of roles makes up Judge Darrell Mavis' daily routine: Aside from being the supervising judge for his district and a trial judge, he's often the end of the line for criminal cases with any hope of settling.

This is long after arraignments and early dispositions. About three quarters of criminal cases that are brought to him settle, while the rest are assigned to trial, said Mavis.
