SAN DIEGO - Anthony J. Battaglia, son of a commercial fisherman, decided at the age of 16 that maybe he wouldn't be a baseball player after all. Instead, he was going to be a judge.

This epiphany happened when the San Diego native was a 10th-grader on a field trip to what was then Municipal Court, where he watched trials and arraignments.
