REDWOOD CITY — Judge Gerald J. Buchwald found his calling on a rainy Saturday afternoon when he was 12.

His mother dragged him to watch “Inherit the Wind” at the Bridge Theater on Geary Street in San Francisco back when 75 cents bought a matinee of back-to-back movies. He does not remember the second movie he watched but can recall the 1960 film about the Scopes trial scene by scene.
