COMPTON — Judge Melissa Widdifield has many resources at her disposal to help juvenile delinquents, but to address tardiness she keeps a box of old alarm clocks in her courtroom.

“I found out a lot of kids aren’t making it to first period because they don’t have phones or alarm clocks,” she said. “Teenage boys are notorious for that. They can’t get up in the morning, and they just want to sleep.”
