ROSEVILLE — Placer County Superior Court Judge Suzanne I. Gazzaniga learned a lot about being on the bench while on the water.

The family law judge was a member of the UCLA women’s rowing team from 1982 to 1986. The sport is particularly unforgiving. Eight tall athletes — the 5’8” Gazzaniga is somewhat short by modern standards — are tightly crammed into sliding seats on a narrow boat.
