VISTA — From the streets of South Los Angeles to his legal career and a case that reached the U.S. Supreme Court, Judge James Simmons has always had a close proximity to gang life.

He grew up in Bloods territory in LA and went to high school in an area predominantly occupied by the Crips gang. Although Simmons wasn’t involved in either, he was occasionally questioned by police in public.
