LOS ANGELES — Judge Kerry White spent 15 years as a head deputy for the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office, managing white-collar, hardcore gang and juvenile crime divisions, but stepping back into the courtroom as a day job after so long away still felt familiar.

“It’s like riding a bike,” he said. “The first couple days were a little shaky, but after that, you get into a rhythm.”
