SAN LUIS OBISPO — Judge Hernaldo Baltodano hangs a few keepsakes in his chambers for motivation. One is a rejection letter from Harvard Law School and the other is a letter his father wrote to President Jimmy Carter seeking asylum.
It was the late 1970s, and the Baltodanos were tourists in the U.S. but didn’t want to return to a civil war in Nicaragua.
