BAKERSFIELD -- Judge Gloria Cannon initially crossed off a career in family law after volunteering as an undergraduate at the Family Violence Law Center in Oakland.

"I found it to be emotionally draining to go in and listen to people -- get their last three incidents of domestic violence to get a restraining order," she said. "I would leave there just depressed and realized I didn't want to do that."
