LOS ANGELES — Armenui Ashvanian didn’t speak a word of English when she fled to the United States from what was then the Armenian Soviet Socialist Republic at 17.

With her family expatriating within a year of the Soviet Union’s dissolution and the declaration of Armenian independence, life could have ended up very differently for Ashvanian, who in 2018 was appointed a Los Angeles County Superior Court judge.
