LANCASTER — The only thing more unusual than the sight of the Michael D. Antonovich Antelope Valley Courthouse ascending high above the barren desert is a look at Judge Ashfaq Chowdhury’s tiny courtroom within.

Instead of a traditional bench, Chowdhury oversees his unlawful detainer and small claims calendar from a desk in front of fewer than a dozen public seats in a room no bigger than a deluxe storage unit.
