Sonoma County Superior Court Judge Christopher M. Honigsberg did not want to go into the family business.

His father, Peter J. Honigsberg, was a civil rights lawyer when his son was young and, later, founded Witness to Guantanamo, a project that includes interviews with former detainees and others who have worked in or are associated with the prison at Guantánamo Bay.
