REDWOOD CITY — Sean P. Dabel won his bid for judge several months before election day.

While it’s common for incumbent judges to run unopposed, the then-deputy district attorney secured an open seat on the San Mateo County Superior Court after no one else applied by the end of filing day.

“It was kind of a surprise,” Dabel said. “But I was lucky enough it worked out that way.”
