Alameda County (Hayward)

HAYWARD -- Shortly after 9/11, Judge Somnath Raj Chatterjee took on one of the nation's first terrorism cases. His team represented John Walker Lindh, a U.S. citizen who was captured in Afghanistan in 2001 and accused of fighting for the Taliban against the Northern Alliance.

"I think it was a 10-count indictment," the judge said. "The lead count was conspiracy to kill U.S. citizens abroad."
