Thomas Owen jumped at the chance to take a job in Del Norte County after law school, but he underestimated how far away it was.

"I thought it would be like a three-hour drive from Menlo Park, where I lived. Oops!" he laughed. "It's seven hours from San Francisco."

Del Norte County is the terminus of Northern California, the last stop before Oregon.
