SHAFTER -- On his way to work, Judge Jose Benavides commutes past farms like the one where he grew up picking fruit.

"Grapes, peaches, plums, you name it," he said of the bounty he harvested as a youth in Kern County. "And when it comes to grapes, there were table grapes, there's wine grapes, there's raisin grapes. There's different things that are done with grapes. Therefore the picking is different."
