MURRIETA -- When a child finds a new home, Judge Michael J. Rushton has a tradition of taking a picture with the freshly formed family.

"There's probably countless pictures of me with kids getting adopted with their parents on adoption day," he said.

A relative adopting a child or the child being reunified with a parent make up the happy endings to Rushton's cases, but they often require taking an arduous path.
