LOS ANGELES — When she was 13, Judge Michelle E. DeCasas sat in on a trial that inspired her to pursue law. But it wasn’t a random case she observed. It was over her mother’s murder.

DeCasas said she had a tumultuous childhood growing up in San Diego, and she and her siblings were often homeless and living out of shelters and cars. Her parents split up when she was a teen, and her father was in and out of jail.
