When Judge Carla L. Garrett was an undergraduate, she decided to skip a career in child psychology because she worried that she would be a “mental wreck” seeing kids suffer. It’s a decision that might appear counterintuitive since she became a judge in family law more than 30 years later.

With age, and children of her own with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, Garrett has learned that kids are resilient.
